[caption id="attachment_839" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Guilt Free Getaway"][/caption] Travel and tourism is increasingly important in the global economy. The World Travel and Tourism Council says it accounts for one in nine jobs worldwide, and more than 10 per cent of economic output. It is estimated that a billion people will be travelling abroad each year by 2010. Tourism can and does bring benefits to local people, but only if it's fair. Sadly, many communities are displaced and lose their livehoods to make way for tourism developments. As we would exercise discernment over items produced with child labour, we should also strive to ensure our trips abroad are ethically, socially, and environmentally sustainable. Whilst this might be thought to be too worthy, too preachy, ignoring the adverse impacts we may incur is only to risk the beauty we seek when setting out.
